The NFC West heavyweight showdown on September 10th in Melbourne, Australia, features two top contenders fighting to keep their championship hopes alive. Both teams finished the 2025 season at 12-5 with losses to the eventual world champion Seahawks. Vying to keep pace, both teams also face the challenge of perfecting their roster while depending on aging veteran talent. The classic conundrum - Super Bowl or bust - will play out dramatically in the NFC West this season. 

 

The Niners are facing the reality of entering the last year of Mr. Irrelevant’s rookie contract while relying heavily on expensive veterans. When Purdy’s 5-year $265M contract hits the books, it will be impossible to maintain their star-studded roster intact. To maximize the potential of their All-Pro/Hall of Fame portfolio, GM John Lynch used free agency to go from strength to strength. He added veteran WRs Mike Evans (three-years, $60M) and Christian Kirk (one-year, worth up to $6M)alongside Ricky Pearsall and Demarcus Robinson in the receiving room.

 

The Rams are also coming up on a veteran talent cliff. To complement MVP Matthew Stafford and his top duo, Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, Rams GM Les Snead brought in two of the best defensive talents in the game: reigning DPOY defensive end Myles Garrett and All-Pro corner Trent McDuffie. These additions put the Rams into rarified air with indisputably the best roster in football. But all magic comes with a price. To secure this league-best roster, Los Angeles has mortgaged its future. They’ve also backloaded their star contracts to fit them under the cap. When the bill comes due, these players will have retired or aged beyond recognition. The Rams' future looks bleak with massive dead cap space and no young talent on the horizon. The only thing that will help fans cope with the dark days to come will be a 2026 Championship Ring.
